Felt grow bag fabric from India: what to specify in a nonwoven for grow bags

Grow bags made from nonwoven felt let air reach the roots and let excess water drain, which is why nurseries and balcony gardeners choose them over plastic pots. The bag is only as good as the fabric it is stitched from. This guide is for bag makers and importers who buy the felt as roll stock and need to know what to specify.

Why felt works for plants

  • Air passes through the fabric, so roots near the wall are pruned by the air instead of circling
  • Water drains through the wall, which reduces waterlogging
  • The fabric is flexible and light, and it folds flat for shipping and storage
  • A thick felt insulates the root zone from sudden heat

These effects depend on the weight and thickness of the felt, which is why they belong in the specification.

GSM and thickness

A heavier, thicker felt keeps its shape when the bag is full of wet soil and lasts through more seasons. A lighter felt costs less per bag but sags and tears sooner, particularly in larger bags. Match the weight to the bag size and the number of seasons you want it to last. Our GSM guide explains how weight relates to thickness and feel.

Fibre: polypropylene, polyester or recycled

  • Polypropylene — light, does not absorb water and resists rot; sensitive to long, direct sunlight
  • Polyester — stable, with good recovery; a common choice for durable felt
  • Recycled fibre — available as recycled PP or recycled PET in some grades; confirm the colour and consistency with a sample

See polyester vs polypropylene for how the fibres compare. If the bags will sit in full sun for years, tell us before you order and ask what can be supplied for outdoor exposure.

Colour

Grey and black are common for grow bags. Darker colours absorb more heat in direct sun, so the colour affects the root zone as well as the look. Colour is set to order, and an approved sample fixes the shade for repeat orders.

Roll width and cutting

Our rolls are 5.0–5.2 m wide and can be cut narrower, which lets a bag maker choose the width that wastes the least fabric when cutting panels. Give us your bag dimensions and we can discuss a roll width and length that suit.

What we supply, and what the bag maker does

We supply the nonwoven felt in rolls. Cutting, stitching, handles and finished bags are made by the bag maker. Samples are available on request, so you can test stitching and a filled bag before you order in volume. Send your specification through the enquiry form, or use the quote checklist. See our multi-colour needle punched felt for colour options.

Questions

What fabric are felt grow bags made from?

Needle punched nonwoven felt, usually polypropylene, polyester or recycled fibre. It is permeable to air and water, flexible and light.

What GSM is used for felt grow bags?

It depends on the bag size and the life you want. Heavier felt holds its shape and lasts longer, and lighter felt is cheaper but sags sooner. Send your bag size and we will suggest a weight to sample.

Do you make finished grow bags?

We supply the felt in rolls. Cutting, stitching and finished bags are made by the bag maker.

What colours are available?

Colour is set to order, and grey and black are common for grow bags. An approved sample fixes the shade for repeat orders.
